The Beta Lambda Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity was founded on February 21, 1942. Before that the chapter was a local fraternity called Chi Theta Tau. Chi Theta Tau came into existence in January of 1921. Chi Theta Tau aspired to take a National Fraternity sponsor. The first choice the chapter had in mind was Beta Kappa. Chi Theta Tau eventually joined Beta Kappa in 1935 to become the Alpha Tau chapter of Beta Kappa.
As the years went on, Beta Kappa started to face financial problems, and was later absorbed in 1942 into Theta Chi Fraternity. But prior to Beta Kappa's integration into Theta Chi, Chi Theta Tau decided to leave Beta Kappa early, and petitioned for an honorable discharge in 1940. Coincidentally, around the same time as Beta Kappa's merger into Theta Chi, Chi Theta Tau decided to petition Theta Chi Fraternity for a charter. That petition was granted and The Beta Lambda Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity was born in 1942. Beta Lambda became the first former Beta Kappa chapter to be installed as a chapter of Theta Chi.
After 52 years of operation as a chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity it was closed due to low membership. The doors of our fraternity were not closed long. Due to the hard work of our Founding Fathers and some loyal Alumni the chapter was reinstalled on April 4, 1997.
When the chapter closed in '94 much of our local history, documentation, and historical items were lost. With more Alumni involvement, we are building on this section. If you have any information about the local history
of our chapter please e-mail Ron Spicer.
Please visit this section again in the future for more information regarding the history of our chapter.
